Sphere, slightly flattened at the north and south poles.

Often called an "oblate spheroid", it measures 6378.137 km in diameter through the equatorial line, and 6356.752 km in diameter through the polar line.

The first person to find the earth as a sphere was Eratosthenses a greek geographer. He put tower up a tower like the Washington monument on land and then he put a well and when the sun reflected on the tower it made a shadow in the well and made an angle. This is called the indirect method. He said the circumference was about 2608.8 km long. He found this out easily by finding the angle of the shadow 23.5 degrees north and putting it over 360 degrees and then 2608.5 km on top of x then he cross multipled and got 39960 km which is the earths circumference. If the earth were flat it wouldn't make an angle because the parrell rays would be just facing us. An other example is when you see a ship floating out into see and it looks like it sinking, the boat is just going around the sphere. Another example is that when there is a lunar eclipse you can see the reflection of the earth on the moon.
