The term "Fossil Fuels" refers to oil and other carbon based fuels which are the decayed remnants of fossil animals, plants, etc. The bulk of fossil fuels come from decayed plants; the process progresses over time, and is dependent on the geographic stresses and pressures in the area where it is formed. For example, in some areas where pressure is much greater, oil can turn to coal; further pressure still over time and that coal will turn to diamond.

Some fossils become stuck in mud or are covered by silt and mud after they die, and eventually may turn to stone. The best example of this is the Petrified Forest in Arizona, where an entire forest remnant of trees exists as stone. You can actually see the details of the ancient wood - tree rings, etc.

So in answer to your question, yes, they are really fossil remnants.

THERE are no fossil fuels, listen to this all those searching for the truth. Now these are not my words, i give th URL at the end. A 1974 article in the Bulletin of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists put it this way: "All giant [oil] fields are most logically explained by inorganic theory because simple calculations of potential hydrocarbon contents shows that organic materials are too few to supply the volumes of petroleum involved." A 1999 Wall Street Journal article concurred, stating that most geologists, "are hard-pressed to explain why the world's greatest oil pool, the Middle East, has more than doubled its reserves in the past 20 years, despite [the] intense exploitation and relatively few new discoveries. It would take a pretty big pile of dead dinosaurs and prehistoric plants to account for the estimated 660 billion barrels of oil in the region, notes Norman Hyne, a professor at the University of Tulsa." By burning oil all we do is produce more CO2. But wait CO2 feeds trees and plants, which then turn into oxygen. so the biosphere is stable no matter how much co2 we put in, does this answer your question. The URL is in the Related Links:

An amusing blog.

I particularly liked the quote from Thomas Gold, a professor emeritus at Cornell University. "Oil is actually a renewable, primordial syrup continually manufactured by the Earth under ultra-hot conditions and tremendous pressures. As [it] migrates toward the surface, it is attacked by bacteria, making it appear to have an organic origin dating back to the dinosaurs." Such a relief to know that oil is actually renewable.
