Actually, all trees attract lightning. They are tall and usually filled with moisture, thus providing a good electrical conducting path for lightning. Every day, thousands of trees are hit by lightning throughout the world. Past studies of the kinds of trees struck are complicated. It depends on tree height, the variety of trees present, and soil conditions. Overall, the oak tree appears to be most vulnerable: "Beware the oak; it draws the stroke." Oaks tend to be taller than the surrounding trees, thus attracting the lightning. They also have a high moisture content, which increases their ability to conduct the surge of electricity. When a tree is hit be lightning, most of the electrical charge moves through the outer, growing portion of the tree. This intense current can instantly vaporize sap into steam. As a result, the tree may violently split or even explode. About half of all trees struck by lightning survive for the moment. However, they are often weakened and made susceptible to future disease. A target tree is better off if struck after it has been thoroughly soaked by rain. Much of the electrical charge is then able to move safely down the outside surface moisture instead of through the internal tree. Source: http://www.christiananswers.net/kids/lightningtrees.html

It is a myth that lightening is attracted to metal. Lighting strikes more metal objects because metal conducts electricity better than other materials. During a lightning storm, avoid contacts with metal objects, including an umbrella with a metal handle.

Lightning is not attracted to wood, as wood is a poor conductor in electricity. Lightning hits trees because it is a tall object, and lightning is attracted to tall objects. Lightning is also attracted to metal, but the metal has to be very high up, like a lightning rod.

No, Sounds and light are two different things, one cannot be attracted to another... Although when one happens the other might as well because thy are both forms of energy and sound is caused by vibrations... So when lighting strikes air particles may be vibrated causing thunder

I wanted to answer this question to, I learned some of the basics of what lightning will strike. In this question, metal would be the correct answer, but there is something to learn about the wood part.

Remember: Lightning can strike anywhere, and it can strike the same place twice! Lightning strikes on earth about 100 times per second!

Wood: No lightning striking wood is unlikely, but here we would be considering tall trees. Taller object are more likely to get struck by lightning metal or wood! Never stand in an open area during a lightning storm, for you may be the tallest object in the area, which means you are likely to get hit!!

Metal: Lightning is electricity basically, it is likely to strike metals than wood. So during a lightning storm, tallest object or not, never carry a lightning rod such as a umbrella. A lot of people think a lightning rod is an object, which is possible to make, the term "Lightning Rod" actually is a way to describe an object, if the object is high on length and low on width, like an umbrella, it would be considered a lightning rod. Street lamps and lights are also considered lightning rods, consider them a reference to what a lightning rod is.

Those are your basics of lightning.

Do dead trees attract lightning more than living trees?

Dead trees get charged quickly, since dry / dead roots dont supply water to the leaves of the tree the charge accumulated also does not get discharged to the ground. Hence lightning strikes dead trees more than living trees.

Why do churches need lightning conductors?

Lightning conductors or rods, protect a building from lightning hits by harmlessly draining of the electrical charge thereby preventing fire or other damage. Churches with steeples that tower over surrounding buildings and trees would be especially likely to attract lightning.

Is it safe under a tree during a thunderstorm?

No. Trees, often being much taller than surrounding structures, will attract lightning strikes. and the tree can get on fire

Why you have to stay away from trees during lightning?

lightning is attracted to the taller objects in any open space .so being near tall trees in an open space is dangerous. The lightning can "jump" from the tree through the air to your body if it finds that your body, with its high salt content, is an easier conductor.
