The main effects on the earth by lightning is the production of forest fires and also the production of nitrate fertilizer into the soil. In one year lightning produces about 250,000 tons of usable nitrogen fertilizer. When people did not inhabit parts of the earth, or did not use fire, almost all forest fires were caused by lightning. Nowadays, most forest fires are caused by people. After a forest fire, when vegetation and trees grow back, the growth is strong and lush. The reason for this is probably twofold. The burnt plant matter is mineralized and becomes very good fertilizer for future plant growth. Additionally, old trees and vegetation gets burnt and removed, making room for new and possibly vigorous growth. This can function in a positive evolutionary way, since it provides a way for new plants and vetgetation to develop and even evolve. It gives evolution a better chance to work. However, these days with a high population of humans on the planet, there seem to be far too many forest fires. Many, or even most fires are deliberately set by thrill seekers or immature persons. It would seem that the effect of fires caused by lightning was more beneficial to the earth in the past when the human population of the earth was very low. In addition, the use of manmade nitrate fertilizer is much greater than that produced by lightning. A thunderstorm and lightning can produce negative ionization of the air, and it is claimed by some that this may improve a person's mood.

When lightning hits a lightning rod where does the lightning go?

When lightning strikes a lightning rod, the rod provides a path of least resistance for the electricity to travel safely to the ground. The lightning is then conducted harmlessly into the earth, minimizing the risk of damage to nearby structures.

Does lightning go from earth to clouds or from clouds to earth?

Lightning typically travels from clouds to the ground, but it can also occur between clouds or within a cloud. This happens when electrical charges build up in the clouds and discharge towards the ground, creating a lightning strike.

Is lightning the most powerful thing on earth?

Lightning is a powerful natural phenomenon, but it is not the most powerful thing on Earth. Nuclear reactions, such as those that occur in the sun, release much more energy than lightning. Additionally, seismic activities like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can also unleash tremendous power on Earth.

Do scientists have devices to minimise the impact on lightning?

Lightning rods have been used on barns and the older, taller houses for a good long time. They are still used on taller structures. There are now devices to short lightning-induced current to ground on communication wires entering a house or other structure. New,improved grounding systems have been devised in the last 5 years. By the way, lightning rods are meant to continually drain off the static electricity in the air that, if it built up, could become a lightning bolt. Radio towers have the same beneficial effect.

What role does induction play when lightning strikes earth?

Induction plays a key role in the process of lightning striking the Earth. Lightning is the result of an electrical discharge between the negatively charged base of a cloud and the positively charged surface of the Earth, which is induced by the separation of charges within the cloud through turbulent processes. This charge separation sets up an electric field that can lead to the discharge of lightning.
