Various responses from Florida contributors:

  • It snowed December 23, 2009. There are occasional flurries if the winter is unusually cold.
  • It snows every few years in Jacksonville (northern Florida), even occasionally collecting up to an inch or two on the ground. It has only snowed once in Miami (January 19, 1977), and in that case nothing collected on the ground.
  • Yes, it is snowing outside right now. I just rode my bike home and I live in the Saint Augustine area.
  • Yes. Occasionally, in Florida, there are unusual storms that pass through small areas and strange things can happen. I was in mid-Florida (just north of Ocala) in June 1985 when a massive thunderstorm passed overhead and it snowed hard pellets that were not quite sleet or hail - neither one. The snow stayed on the ground for only an hour, but the temperature had dropped from the mid-50s to 28 and then back again in that time.

Florida has large grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) that were attacking our garden at the time, and I noticed three of them had been frozen in place.
