As a geologist who just visited Kauai, I was impressed by the diversity of the geology.

Kauai is now know to have formed from not one but two shield volcanos. It is also the home of Mt. Waialeale the wettest place on Earth. The combination of volcanic rock and sediments and high rainfall given Kauai a diverse geomorphology.

Landforms range from Waimea Canyon in the west, to sand dunes in the south east.

There are reefs, beaches and erosional cliffs scattered around the circumference of the island. The rivers on the island have formed flat fertile river valleys. The volcanic lava flows of various density, have formed waterfalls along the various water courses.

There are two extinct volcanic caulderas, numerous canyons, and rolling hills dissected by stream valleys.

Majestic eroded ridges and hogbacks form unbelievable vistas on the west end of the island along the remote Napali coast. There is even a swamp in the ancient cauldera source of the islands rivers.

While beach combing along the north coast, I noticed numerous beach terraces formed by recent storms. I estimate the terraces were 25-50 yards wide and at least 6 feet high.
