they are burnt, the heat from burning is used to turn water into steam, the steam is then piped through turbines, the turbines spin at high speeds, these are connected via a drive shaft (long pole) to a big magnet which spins to generate the electric

Fossil Fuels eg coal are burned in boilers to make steam which in turn spins turbines to run the generators and create electricity.
