Whenever I hear thunder, no matter how far away it might be, the first thing I do is turn off my computer and disconnect the power bar. I also turn off and disconnect other electrical appliances, especially the expensive ones like the television. These items can suffer significant damage if lightning hits a utility pole, even one that is some distance away, because the surge can travel significant distances through the wires. I shut the windows, but leave about half an inch open at the bottom. Then I stay away from all doors and windows, to avoid being struck by broken glass in the event of a direct or close hit. I also avoid the use of the telephone, again because of the possibility of a surge. Then I relax and wait for the storm to pass.
