    • Burning fossil fuels for industry, transport and generation of electricity releases old carbon that has been sequestered underground for millions of years. This is not part of the normal carbon cycle and greenhouse effect which keeps the planet comfortably warm.
  • By planting more trees and stopping deforestation.
    • Trees absorb billions of tons of carbon dioxide every year. But most countries are reducing the size of their forests. Serious droughts in the Amazon Rainforest in 2005 and again in 2010 mean that many trees died. The rotting trees will add to the carbon in the air and the forest will be able to absorb less CO2 than usual.
