The space between particles of rock or mineral particles in sedimentary rock may be larger than in other sedimentary rock, allowing it to hold a higher quantity of gas or liquid. In igneous rock, porosity is usually a product of rapid cooling of lava, where trapped gas bubbles have not had time to escape the rapidly solidifying material.

Porosity normally describes the void space in between grains. If porosity is zero, the only way a rock would be permeable was if there were structural discontinuities present such as joints or fracture planes along which water could flow.
