The primitive atmosphere was mainly composed of CO2. However, with the emergence of life, this CO2 was reduced in photosynthesis and increased Oxygen. Now our atmosphere is mainly composed of Nitrogen.

Earth's atmosphere contains a variety of gases, including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide that have allowed and continue to allow our forms of life to continue to function and develop.

Earth's atmosphere is unusual in that it contains an abundance of free oxygen. This element so readily combines with other elements that its presence in an atmosphere is considered an excellent signal for photosynthetic life. Venus and Titan (Saturn's largest moon) both have atmospheres much denser than ours. The atmosphere of Mars is far less dense--only one thousandth of the pressure of ours at sea level. The Martian atmosphere could not support humans, but it could support other earthly life forms.

The primitive atmosphere was filled with hydrogen and had very little oxygen. It also contained ammonia and methane. This type of gas could not have supported human life.
