Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas. As we burn fossil fuel (coal, oil and natural gas) more and more CO2 is being added to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the earth is getting warmer.

Ozone gas, present in the stratosphere, absorb the uv rays of the sun which are harmful to living beings. But it has been found that ozone layer is depleting. The depletion of ozone layer will cause lesser absorption of uv rays resulting in an increase in the number of skin and eye related diseases and the decrease in the production of plants and crops. the major cause of ozone layer depletion is the release of cfc's , also called freons. They destroy the ozone layer but have little effect on global warming.

CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons are greenhouse gases that add to the warming effect on the earth. They have now been largely banned by most countries. In part they have been replaced with HFCs, or hydrofluorocarbons, which break down more easily and so are not such a great problem.

In terms of the overall affect on global warming they have always been very marginal and possibly positive.

The larger issue with CFC's is the possible increase in the depletion of ozone of the atmosphere around the poles. This ozone is a greenhouse gas and the depletion of it has been linked to the lack of warming in the Antarctic.

Not directly. However, chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, formerly used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and aerosol propellants, are destructive to our Earth's stratospheric ozone layer, which shields us from overexposure to ultraviolet light from the sun.

CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) are known to rise to the ozone layer, where the chlorine atoms break apart the ozone molecules. This increases the amount of dangerous UV (ultraviolet) radiation reaching the surface of the earth, leading to more cases of cancer (such as skin cancer) and an increased chance of genetic mutations, aka birth defects.

For this reason, CFCs were banned in aerosols and sprays in a number of countries starting in 1978; unfortunately, it will probably take decades (if not more than a century) to undo the damage and rebuild the ozone layer.

The increase in ultraviolet light hitting the surface also potentially affects global warming, as some of that extra energy is trapped as heat by the waters of the world's oceans. In addition, one of the byproducts of the breakdown of ozone by CFCs is carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a known greenhouse gas.

They help trap heat in the atmosphere, the enhanced greenhouse effect, thus increasing the overall heat on Earth.
