From tectonic movements. Plates beneath the crust, bearing continents and ocean floors, move all the time because they drift on the liquid mantle of the planet. When two bump into each other, they may form a mountain range as the side of the impact rises up. This happened when India moved north and bumped into the rest of Asia, forming the Himalayas!

Try placing your hands on a towel and moving them towards each other, you'll get folds too, because of the same mechanism. ^^
