He could have been talking about greenhouse gases.

The presence of some water vapour and some carbon dioxide in our atmosphere allows the Earth to retain soar warmth. Without them we would be iike Mars - very cold. However, too much of this good thing could retain too much heat, like Venus, and we'd bake.

The present levels are being tipped towards the "too much" by man-made emissions, reduced uptake of carbon dioxide by forests and loss of carbon contained in soils. In addition methane (a potent greenhouse gas) is being released from the permafrost.
