During the hours of sunlight, trees absorb the gas carbon dioxide in carrying out the first stage of photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is the gas that is being blamed as the cause of global warming, therefore trees reduce the amount that remains in the atmosphere - considered to be a good thing. When the process of photosynthesis is complete trees then release oxygen as a by-product into the atmosphere. Since all of sentient life relies upon oxygen this is considered to be a good thing also.
