You have to take the recoil housing off. Then wind the spool up in the opposite direction of how the cord wraps on (counter clockwise). At the same time make sure the cord does not wrap onto the spool. After several turns the spring will tighter. Allow it to release, taking the cord onto the spool with it. Put it back on and get some fish.
