To check the acidity of the soil all u have to do is check it with a pH paper. If the value shows a colour red or some colour near to it it means the soil is acidic in nature. But if the colour is blue or greenish, it is basic in nature.

Does acidic soil have low or high pH levels?

Acidic Soil has a low pH . Remember the pH scale. 1 ( very acidic) ,, to 7 (neutral) ,, to 14 (very alkaline). Farmers often put lime on acidic soil in order to remove the acidity. As per the equation. 2H^+(aq) + Ca(OH)2(s) = Ca^(2+)(aq) + 2H2O(l) It should be noted that plants prefer acidic conditions, and other prefer more neutral/alkaline conditions.

Why farmers need to know how basic or acidic the soil?

Plants grow better in soil with the PH (acid-base) they have adapted to. The acidity or the alkalinity of the soil is important to know in order to grow a particular plant. Some plants want a acidic soil and some want a basic soil. However, most plants prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline soil. So, it is important for the farmers to know what type of soil it is in order to balance or neutralize the soil. They should know what type of inorganic substance/fertilizer to add in order to neutralize the soil.

How does the pH of soil relate to the pH of the water around the soil?

The pH value of a soil is influenced by the kinds of parent materials from which the soil was formed. Soils formed from basic rocks have a higher pH than soil formed from acidic rocks. Water passing through soil leach nutrients such as calcium and magnesium. These nutrients are replaced by acidic elements such as aluminum and iron. Therefore soil that is formed under high rainfall are more acidic than soil that is formed under arid conditions.
