How does Carbon Dioxide make the planet heat up?

CO2 is one of the greenhouse gases which contributes to global warming. Scientists consider that these gases go into the upper atmosphere, and trap the reflected sun light rays. Carbon dioxide acts as a greenhouse gas by trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere. When sunlight reaches the Earth's surface, some of the radiation is absorbed and re-radiated as heat. Carbon dioxide molecules then trap some of this heat, preventing it from escaping back into space, which contributes to the warming of the planet.
