light waves from the sun pass through the windows and get trapped in the car. The heat energy then builds up and has no where to go, making the inside much hotter than outside. It can easily get warmer than 100 degrees.

The sun's rays are atracted to dark colors the brighter the color of the car the less heat it asborbs and the darker the hotter it becomes. An ice cream inside of a black car would melt faster than an ice cream in a white car while an ice cream outside of a car would melt slower than both.

Heat transfer into the car on a sunny day - when the car is in the sun at least - is primarily via radiative heat transfer. The rate of heat transfer is proportional to the difference in the fourth powers of the temperatures of the heat source and the heat sink. It also depends on the transmissivity and reflectivity of the medium through which the heat is being radiated. The sun is VERY hot compared to the interior of the car so there is a pretty strong driving force for the heat to enter the car. The temperature difference between the interior of the car (even when it gets hot inside) is pretty small by comparison so there is much less driving force for the heat to leave the car and radiate into the surroundings. The windows of the car are the other reason the heat comes in and stays. The glass is very transparent to the wavelengths of the light coming through (the energy coming from the sun) but much more opaque to the wavelengths of the energy trying to radiate back out of the car. If they were the same, you would see the car glow like the sun. The windows instead tend to reflect the heat back into the interior of the car - so a car sitting out in the sun can get much hotter than the surroundings.

Perhaps you have heard of the "greenhouse effect" - which is why you see greenhouses with transparent walls and ceilings that let in the light and keep the plans warm and alive even during the winter when the plants outside are frozen and dead - same phenonmena.

Because the car has been absorbing the heat energy from the sun. Just like water-it absorbs the heat from the sun and keeps it in, making it warmer than the outside temperature.

The sun's heat gets trapped in the interior of a car. Also depending on what color the interior is, it may get hotter or cooler.

Think about it... The heat gets through the windows and the hot air has nowhere to go so the air is trapped.. Thus.. Making the car hot.

What does it mean forms of energy are interchangeable?

It means that energy can change between different forms. Take for example a car sitting outside during warm and sunny day. The light energy produced by the sun enters through the car's windows and changes into heat energy. When someone enters the car and notices it is warmer in the car than outside the car, the increased temperature inside the car is due to the sun's light energy changing into heat energy.

Why can it get very warm in car that sits in the sun on a cold day?

The reason why it still gets hot in a car on a cold day when the sun is out is because the cold air cannot get inside the car to keep it cool. But the sun is able to shine right through the window and heat it up.
