I believe it changes, as the faults which are composed of crust slip past eachother, on occasion causing fractures in Earth's surface. It could just be a small crack, or maybe a huge trench.

There is convection, when two plates push towards each other and diverging when the pull apart. There are two kinds of plates that can go through these types of motions as well, continental and oceanic. (the land and oceans of course.)

When two continental plates come together (or convect) it creates mountains. When two oceanic plates convect, it creates underwater volcanoes and treches on the ocean floor. Now when a oceanic plate and a continental plate converge, it creates treches on the ocean floor close to the continental plate and a volcano starts at the edge of the continental plate.

Now with diverging, any kind of plates can move, and will produce a volcano.

There is also the motion of a Transform boundry, (When to plates slide side-ways) which causes Earthquakes.
The movement of the crust is because of the movement of the tectonic plates.These tectonic plates floats on the surface of the mantle.As the crust ,ie,the tectonic plates move the landforms above it it also moves .however this rate is very slow,around 3-4 cm in a year.The movement of the tectonic plates can sometime bring about eartquakes,tsunamis and other natural disasters .this movement of he earths crust led to the continental drift theory.
