The sun warms us, and most of its rays warm the surface of the earth. This warmth rises up into the atmosphere (infrared heat) and most of it is captured by greenhouse gases already there (natural water vapour and carbon dioxide, as well as extra carbon dioxide from burning coal and oil).

The heat from these warm greenhouse gases spreads out in all directions, including back down to earth, where it warms the earth's surface a bit more.
