this happens because the sun provides the majority of the heat we feel during the day. While even at night the ground can retain a great deal of this heat. The air surrounding us does not. So without the sun it quickly gets cooler than it was during the day.

The fundamental process controlling temperature is the balance between incoming solar radiation and outgoing (emitted) long wave radiation.

The strongest factor influencing incoming solar radiation is the angle of the sun relative to the ground. Where the sun gets nearly overhead (like in the tropics) it is high, while when the angle is low (like at the poles) the same amount of energy is spread out over a larger area. In the winter hemisphere the angles are lower, so there is less sunlight to warm the surface. Clouds and surface reflectivity also play a part.

Mid-latitude temperature variations are typically driven by frontal passage.

For reasons too complicated to go into here the is something of a boundary between the warmer tropical and colder polar air. The boundary is inherently unstable, so there are waves that constantly pass through. The process drags cold polar air toward the equator and warm tropical air toward the pole, creating large temperature variations every few days.

The place where you are turns away from the sun, causing seasons. In winter its cold, because you're facing away from the sun, in summer its hot, because you're getting direct sunlight,in spring, hot, but not as hot as summer, because you're facing towards the sun but not getting direct sunlight. In fall it's chilly, but not cold like winter, because you're facing halfway away from the sun and halfway towards it.

The tilt of the Earth's axis causes the cold weather. When part of the Earth is away from the sun, that area will have the cooler temperatures and start the seasons of fall and winter.

The weather changes from hot to cold because our globe moves around the Sun, and when our side of the earth gets to the dark side, it gets colder.
