The general rule is to multiply the time difference (in seconds) between the arriving p and s waves by 8 km/s. The result will give the distance to the quakes origin. In the case of a 40 second delay the distance would be 320 km or roughly 200 miles. It should be noted that the method detailed here is used for quakes occuring less than 200 km away.
