Convection currents form in the earth's asthenosphere (the middle mantle) due to heat from the core. They can also form in any other fluid (scientifically, a fluid can be either a liquid or gas), such as boiling water, hot soup, and even the air. But let's use the asthenosphere as an example because it's a good one.

1) Heat from the core heats up the material at the bottom of the asthenosphere.

2) When fluid is heated, its temperature increases, its volume increases, and its density decreases. The heated fluid will rise towards the top of the asthenosphere because it is less dense and thus, lighter.

3) After a while, the fluid cools. When fluid is cooled, its temperature decreases, its volume decreases, and its density increases. It is heavy so it falls back to the bottom of the asthenosphere.

4) The process starts all over.

5) Convection currents in the earth's asthenosphere will not stop unless the core cools, which means they will go on for millions of years.
