Fossil fuels have a range of periods of time to form:

  • peat can form in as little as a few hundred years
  • soft and hard coal takes hundreds of thousands to millions of years to form
  • petroleum usually requires millions of years to form
  • natural gas takes a very wide range of time to form
  • etc.
