The Cretaceous Period was the 3rd geological period in the Mesozoic Era. The end of the period would see the extinction of all non-avian dinosaurs as well as all the large marine reptiles, pterosaurs as well many other species of animals and plants. It lasted from 145.5 to 65.5 million years ago. It was the time between 2 extinction events, the smaller End Triassic Extinction event and the larger K-T Exinction event.
During the Cretaceous period, Earth's surface was drastically different from today. The continents were closer together, forming the supercontinent Pangaea, surrounded by a vast ocean called Panthalassa. There were high sea levels, with shallow tropical seas covering many areas that are now land.
The supercontinent Pangaea began to break apart approximately 175 million years ago during the Jurassic period. Over millions of years, the landmass split into the continents we recognize today.
The KT Boundary (also called the Cretaceous-Paleogene, or K-Pg boundary) is a boundary marking the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction (KT extinction) event. It is usually seen as a thin band, caused by an asteroid impact that wiped out much of life at the time.

The lower part of the Cretaceous System consists of six stages: the Berriasian, Valanginian, Hauterivian, Barremian, Aptian, and Albian. 7.) Early Cretaceous characteristically deltaic and lacustrine. 8.) Late Cretaceous including marine deposits, such as sandstone and the characteristic chalk, a pure fine-grained white limestone formed largely of planktonic coccoliths. 9.) As continents continued to drift apart, the climate over much of the land became cooler and drier during the Cretaceous. 10.) plants appeared, and dinosaurs and other reptiles reached their peak of development.

It was a warm tropical place in which many angiosperms (flowering plants) developed and became dominant. Because of this, many new herbivores appeared and others went extinct.The Cretaceous Period was hot and dry.

Flowering plants first appeared around 140 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. They rapidly diversified and became the dominant group of plants, replacing many of the existing groups at the time.
