The questions asks how many moles of carbon atoms.

Molar mass is defined as the mass of one mole of a substance or in this case 6.022x1023 atoms of carbon. So the molar mass for carbon is 12.0 g/mol. Therefore the number of moles of carbon atoms is just 36/12.0 = 3.0 moles of carbon.

How many atoms are in 36 grams of Carbon?

[36 (gC) /12.0 (gC/molC)] * 6.02*10+23 (atoms C/molC) = 1.8*10+24 atoms in 36 g Carbon

3 grams carbon (1 mole C/12.01 grams)(6.022 X 10^23/1 mole C)(1 mole C atoms/6.022 X 10^23)

= 0.25 moles of carbon atoms

( as you may see this is a formal set-up and Alessandro's number is over itself in a form of one, so the first ratio, mole/gram, is all that is needed here )

How many mols of sodium are present in 45.48 g of sodium?

# of moles = Mass÷ Formula weight Example: 6 grams of Carbon atoms Carbon has an atomic mass of 12 grams so according to the Equation # of moles = 6÷ 12 = 0.5 moles For a compound such as CO2 , Formula weight = ( 1 mole of carbon atom weighs 12 grams + 2 moles of oxygen atoms weighs 32 grams ) 44 grams. Example: 24 grams of carbon dioxide = 24÷ 44 = 0.5454 moles So for sodium, # of moles = 45.48 g ÷ 22.99g/mole = moles You divide!
