The greenhouse effect has been keeping the earth warm for millions of years. This fossil fuel burning releases age-old carbon dioxidethat had been hidden underground for 300 million years. This extra CO2 is too much for the carbon cycle to deal with so it remains in the atmosphere, getting warmer and warmer as the months go on.
