The greenhouse effect has been keeping the earth warm for millions of years. But the global warming that the world is worrying about now started about 260 years ago, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (around 1750), when man started digging up coal and oil and burning it for industry, transport and to generate electricity.

This fossil fuel burning releases age-old carbon dioxidethat had been hidden underground for 300 million years. This extra CO2 is too much for the carbon cycle to deal with so it remains in the atmosphere, getting warmer and warmer as the months go on.

How old is global warming?

The theory of global warming became popular in the early 70's. As for how old actual global warming is, is debatable. Some argue that global warming is a natural cycle the earth goes through every so many centuries.

How many scientists agree that global warming is real?

The overwhelming majority of scientists agree that global warming is real. Multiple studies have shown that around 97 of climate scientists support the consensus that human activities are causing global warming.

What percentage of the global warming is caused by India?

India is estimated to contribute around 6-7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which are a major factor in global warming. However, it's important to note that global warming is a complex issue with contributions from many sources worldwide.

How long has global warming effected the earth?

Approximately 4 billion years, give or take a few million years. Since the beginning, the earth has gone through continuous warming and cooling periods. For instance, about 200 million years ago dinsoaurs were roaming around the jungles of Colorado. Global cooling might have been their downfall. More recently, glaciers covered most of Wisconsin about 700,000 years or so ago. Since then there have been as many as 10-12 glacial advances and retreats. The most recent major glacial advance peaked out about 20,000 years ago, then global warming set in and glaciers retreated for about 10,000 years after which there was a slight glacial advance. The earth warmed again and peaked around 5,000 years ago. The warming period since the last major glacial advance was when man started developing agriculture, and have more time to invent stuff. About 2000 years ago there was a minor glacial advance in some areas, then warming. About 500-600 years ago the "little ice age" began with cooling temps that lasted to the mid 1800's. Since then it has been warming except for a cool down from about 1940-1970 when some scientists thought we were going into another "ice age". Since the mid 70's things have been warming rapidly. This warming has been a great opportunity for some folks to blame all global warming on human activities. So far I don't think anyone really knows for sure, but whatever the cause, it could have profound effects on all life on earth, just as it always has.

Is greenhouse effect is the other name of global warming?

Strictly speaking there is no other name for global warming."The whole earth heating up" might be another name.Global warming is causing climate change, so many people think they are both the same, so they say:"Climate change is another name for global warming", but they are not really the same.

What are some solutions that have been suggested for global warming?

There have been many solutions suggested to combat global warming. Some solutions that have been suggested include lowering the emissions of greenhouse gases and planting more trees that can absorb the carbon dioxide to reduce global warming.

How many years ago was it when there was no global warming?

250 years ago we seriously began burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). This was the start of the Industrial Revolution, and the beginning of Global warming.

How many global warmings have been taking place all around the world?

There have been various periods of warming and cooling through the history of the earth. They typically last for thousands of years, often tens of thousands. At the moment there is only one global warming taking place. This one has been happening since 1850 and is the fastest the world has ever seen.

Can the climate change without pollution?

Yes, but it takes many thousands of years. The climate of our planet has always been changing. The past 650K years have seen five warming and cooling cycles according to glacial samples. However, the present global warming has been extremely fast (100 years) and is caused by the pollution of extra greenhouse gases.

Is both global environment and global warming is same?

Not quite, though they are very closely connected. Global warming is the warming of the earth. This is causing climate change, which is the many different changes in climate that are beginning to happen.

What steps have been taken to reduce global warming?

World governments agree that placing a price on carbon emissions is the most effective step that can be taken to reduce global warming. Some progress has been made, but in many countries there is not the political will needed to contribute effectively to averting disaster. There has been a lot more progress at a local level, with individuals doing their bit to reduce global warming, by reducing their electricity consumption and motor vehicle usage.AnswerThe governments have signed a Kyoto agreement to help stop global warming.

What is global warming about?

Global warming is caused by human activity. The planet is warming and this warming is changing the climate. Sea levels are rising and threaten many low-lying areas and cities permanently.
