when water freezes it expands therefor the water takes little space to take of a larger area then when it is placed in water it will float because it is less dense

OR

The simple, easy explanation:

Water is one of the only liquids that expands when it freezes.

Because it puffs up bigger when it's solid ice, it weighs less than water.

And anything that weighs less than water will float on water like ice.

How is the density of ice unusual?

The density of ice is unusual because it is less dense than liquid water. This occurs because of the way water molecules form a crystalline structure when frozen, creating open spaces between molecules that make ice less dense. This is why ice floats on water.

Does ice float because water becomes more or less dense when its frozen?

The structure of frozen water (ice) is less dense than the random arrangement of the water molecules in liquid water, thus ice floats because water becomes less dense when it is frozen. Because of buoyancy forces, an object placed in a liquid will float if it is less dense than the liquid and sink if it is more dense.

What is the density of ice and how does it compare to the density of water?

The density of ice is about 0.92 grams per cubic centimeter, while the density of water is about 1 gram per cubic centimeter. This means that ice is less dense than water, which is why ice floats on water.

What makes ice float on the surface of water?

when crystal structure of ice breaks, the liberated molecule become associated so strongly that they pack together more closely than in ice crystal itself. as a consequence ice becomes less denser than water and floats on it

The ice ball or brick floats in water tank Then if the ice melts what will happend?

When the ice ball or brick melts, it will turn into water. The overall water level in the tank will remain the same because the volume of water displaced by the ice when it was floating is equal to the volume of water produced when the ice melts.

Why ice floats in in water?

The reason why ice will float in water is because ice is not as dense as water, therefore, it floats.

Why ice floats on water and does not sink?

Ice is less dense than water, so it floats.

When does ice float in water?

Ice floats in water whenever you PUT ice in water, That's so simple. Whenever you put ice in water it floats ALL THE TIME!

How does ice floats on water?

It is less dense than water, therefore it floats on water.

When does water float and why does it float?

Water floats when it is in the solid phase, called ice. Ice floats because the density of ice is less than the density of water.

Which liquids will an ice cube floats?

ice cubes floats in the water, because it is in the liquid form

Can float on water?

Of course. Fresh water floats on salt water, warmer water floats on cooler water, and ice floats on any water.

How quickly does ice sink in water?

Ice generally floats in water.

Why ice cube floats on water?

Ice is less dense than water.

Do pieces of ice float in salt water?

I think that salty ice cube do float in water because ice bergs float it water and they're made of salty water. i think i depends on the density (Amount of salt) in the ice

Does ice float on water because of cohesion?

Ice floats on water because it is less dense than liquid water. When water freezes and forms ice, the water molecules arrange themselves in a crystalline structure that causes the ice to be less dense. This is why ice floats on water rather than sinking.

Is ice as dense as water?

Ice is less dense than water, that's why it floats.
