This a simple question with many answers. The First and simplest to look at trees. If there is not enough wind for that you can use and light powder. Hunters use corn starch due to the fact that is has no smell and is easy to see. You can even tell the wind speed by how far the powder drifts. To go even further than that you can stand with your back to the wind and drop the powder from shoulder level observing the way the powder moves. Then pick the most direct path of powder in relation to the sun and you can tell the direction of the wind quite accurately. The sun rises in east and sets in the west. I good way to remember the cardinal directions is (N)ever (E)at (S)oggy (W)affles. If you face the sun in the morning and then turn about 90 degrees to the left that is north with in 5 to 18

degrees. Or you can do what I do and lick your finger and hold it up. The side the wind is coming from will be cooler than the others. lol
