A diamond is a mineral, but it be called a "gem stone" if you want to be fancy. Stones are usually round, and is a very broad subject. It varies from very expensive to just a regular old by-the-sidewalk stone. I would say that the best description of a diamond is a crystal.
You can call a diamond a stone, but not all stones are diamonds.
Gold
Finding a diamond 'on the ground' logically means -- in populated areas -- that someone has lost a diamond. The found diamond will probably be cut and polished. If you are in an area where diamonds are mined, you could 'find a diamond on the ground'. The diamond in this case, however, belongs to the site holder or land owner, and you are obligated to delivery it to the owner. In this case, the diamond will be a raw stone, and unless your eyes are trained to recognize the stone as a raw diamond, you may not be motivated to pick it up.
ADAMANT
It's state gem is the diamond and its state mineral is the quartz crystal.
A diamond shines in so many directions because light from the sun or any other light source which shines on the diamond is reflected and refracted back to the eye of the beholder, based on its facets and the innate reflective property of diamond mineral.

Diamond
Take your stone to a certified gemologist to confirm that it is a diamond. It could be a crystal stone of another type, and not a diamond. One reason why a diamond stone would appear hazy to the naked eye is because of flaws in the stone. If the stone is a diamond, it is probably not an expensive stone, given its apparent lack of clarity.
