Carbon is neither good nor bad. It is simply one of the elements which, in combination with other elements such as hydrogen and oxygen, forms the basis for all living matter. Without carbon, there could be no life as we know it.

One well-known compound of carbon is carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases. In normal levels in the atmosphere, it is good because it helps maintain the world at a comfortable temperature, suitable for human existence. Because of human activities the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide has been rising rapidly, which is bad because it is leading to global warming.

Carbon is not bad. More than half the human body is made of carbon. The same with trees. The earth's carbon cycle moves carbon (and carbon dioxide) in and out of the biosphere, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere. We need carbon for life.

The problem arises with carbon dioxide and the atmosphere. Since we began burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) we have been putting extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This is increasing the greenhouse effect and is causing global warming, which, itself, is causing climate change.
