Sand may vary in composition from nearly pure silicon dioxide, gypsum, or basalt, to varying degrees of impurity from mixture with other sediments. Sand is composed of small grains or rock particles or minerals, not a single element.

Truth be told, 'sand' is really just a description of grain size of any solid. However, sand is usually used to refer to silica sand (the stuff found on beaches and deserts and used to make glass etc.). This is not made of a single element, but of a compound, silicon dioxide.

No. Sand is principally silica SiO2 with impurities typically iron(III) oxide which give it the typical reddish color.

How is a compound different from an element-?

A compound is different from an element in that a compound is made up of several elements. An element is a base atom only. Think of a compound as a living room set and an element as a couch only.

Is oxygen an element or a compound or a homogeneous mixture or a heterogeneous mixture?

Oxygen is an element. This means that it is composed of only one kind of atom, and it takes two atoms of oxygen to make one molecule of oxygen. A compound is composed of more than one kind of element. A simple example is carbon dioxide which is composed of one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen. A mixture is composed of more than one kind of compound.

Can a mineral be composed of entirely one element?

Yes, for example, there's diamond which is composed entirely of the element carbon or sulfur which composed entirely of (yup... you guessed it) sulfur.

Which element is graphite composed of?

Graphite is a naturally occurring mineral that is composed of the element carbon (C). Graphite is made up of lots and lots of layers of carbon laid one on top of the other, and it is one allotrope of this element. Diamond, another natural mineral, is also made up of carbon. It is likewise an allotrope of that element, just as graphite is.

What element makes sand but not diamonds when mixed with oxygen?

It is silicon and oxygen that make up sand. Most sand is silicon dioxide, or SiO2. Quartz is the most common of a family of minerals made up of silicon dioxide called silicates. It is one example of a form of silicon dioxide.

Matter that is composed of only one kind of atom is called?

Matter with only one particular kind of atom is known as an element. These atoms can either be located individually or combined into larger units. An example of this would be the notion that carbon is an element, because at it's pure substance state it's composed of only carbon atoms.
