Silicon is very common. It represents about a quarter of the earth's crust. That's a lot of silicon. But it isn't found free in nature, but as a compound, usually oxides like in sand and the silicate minerals. Use the link below for more information.

Silicon is not rare, a large part of the earth is made up of silicon IT is also "grown" for the electronics industry to manufacture what we call "chips"...intergrated circuits. It is grown jn it's purest form to make the device we call a transistor . a transistor is made using using a pure slices of silicon in a sandwich pattern , the middle slice has a dopent added to the "mix making it a semiconductor..I.E. NPN..or..PNP etc. without silicon it is doubtfull if man would have reached the moon in the 60s ? . not to mention PCs, and the countless electronic devices we now take for granted. the first working transister was built by the Bell Telephone Company, USA in 1948. IT WAS BUILT BY BARDEEN, BRAITAIN AND SHOCKLY who worked in Bell's lab.

It is the second most abundant element, after oxygen. It is also found in the human body and in various things all around the universe. It is not a dangerous element.
