Stop adding carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. To do this we have to move entirely to renewable energy and stop burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). Actually that might not even be enough. It might be necessary to reduce the levels of greenhouse gases from their current levels.

There are steps that we could take to mitigate the warming. We could slow the addition of CO2, sulfur oxides, methane, and some other greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. This would be expensive but could lower current levels. Also, we have to remember that Earth has cycled in and out of ice ages many times before human activity became a factor. So, there are some natural phenomena affecting global temperatures, that we have no control over. To name a few: Earth's asymmetric orbit, varying levels of solar energy, and volcanic activity. There are others.
