A: Hey! What's up?
B: Sea levels!
A: Wait! You mean the warming oceans are expanding and pushing sea levels up?
B: Right! You got it! And don't forget the melting ice caps. They are raising the sea levels too!
A: Them too? It's all happening! But what's with all these storms? And the blizzards?
B: Extra heat in the air and oceans is extra energy! That energy feeds the storms, and it's bringing freezing air currents down from the Arctic!
A: But why?
B: We've cut down too many forests, and we can't stop burning coal and oil!
A: So why don't the old men in government do something about it, like solar and wind farms and stuff?
B: Ah, they only want to get re-elected in 3 or 4 years. They don't care about our future!
A: Sad, eh! What can we do?
B: Get our parents to vote them out. There must be some real leaders somewhere!
Global warming refers to the long-term increase in Earth's average surface temperature due to human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, which release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat and cause the planet to warm up, leading to a range of negative impacts like rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and disruptions to ecological systems. Addressing global warming requires reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to cleaner, renewable energy sources.
There have been quite a lot of arguments about global warming. It is in some ways quite difficult to assess the global weather in total, because there is different weather in different locations (and there are really a lot of locations) and within a given location, the weather changes every day (or in some cases every hour) and that is quite a lot of data to try to analyse.
We just finished having a colder than average month of April, in North America, which many people took as an indication that global warming is actually not happening. Yet, it is still true that most of the glaciers of the world are melting, or have melted completely, and the ocean level is consequently rising (warmer water also expands, which contributes further to the rising sea level) although it has only risen a little bit, so far. So it seems that despite a colder than average April, the globe is getting warmer. Also note that this colder than average month was the first month in two years that was not warmer than average. How easily people will dismiss two years of warm months to seize upon a single cold month.
Aside from the issue of whether the world actually is getting warmer or not, there is the secondary, but important question of why it is getting warmer. After all, we do know that the climate of the Earth has gone through very large changes in the past, even before the human race existed. So while some people believe that it is the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities (primarily the burning of fossil fuels) which is the cause of global warming, others argue that the world's climate could be changing for reasons that have nothing to do with human activities. It is actually very hard to be completely certain about this since the global climate is a very large, very complex system that is influenced by many different things. On the other hand, the greenhouse effect is real, and the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide is real, so it is very plausible that people are the cause of global warming (or as it is sometimes said, global warming is anthropogenic in nature).
Then beyond those two points, the next debate is about what we should do, if anything, about global warming. Maybe we would enjoy living in a warmer world. Maybe the coasts of the world will flood, causing massive catastrophe. Maybe we should cut back our greenhouse gas emissions. Maybe we should just wait and see. Maybe we need to create a global satellite array that cuts down in incoming sunlight. Many arguments can be offered for each of these positions.
The timeline for Earth's habitability depends on many variables, but urgent action is needed to address the impacts of global warming. Climate change does pose significant threats to human well-being, but it is possible to mitigate its effects through concerted global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to renewable energy sources. It is crucial for individuals, communities, and governments to work together to address climate change and protect the planet for future generations.
If people do not take action to address global warming, the Earth in 100 years may experience more severe heatwaves, rising sea levels leading to increased flooding, loss of biodiversity, and more extreme weather events. The impacts of climate change could result in widespread food and water shortages, displacement of communities, and disruption to ecosystems.
The petroleum industry contributes to global warming by extracting and burning fossil fuels like oil and gas, releasing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat, leading to a warming effect on the planet. Additionally, activities such as drilling and transportation of petroleum products can also result in methane leakage, which is a potent greenhouse gas.
Some animals endangered by global warming include polar bears, who are losing their sea ice habitat due to rising temperatures, and coral reefs, which are bleaching from warmer waters. Other species like penguins and sea turtles are also at risk due to changing climate patterns affecting their habitats and food sources.
