ISO 14001 is an international environmental document developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for the prevention of industrial pollution. The ISO represents about 150 countries.

Specifically ISO 14001:

Specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system. It applies to those environmental aspects which the organization has control and over which it can be expected to have an influence.

It shows how an organization can:

  • implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system
  • audit its conformance with its own stated environmental policy
  • demonstrate conformance internally and externally
  • demonstrate compliance with environmental laws and regulations
  • certify its environmental management system by an external third party auditors
  • or make a self-determination of conformance

ISO 14001 also is available as course material for the certification of internal or external auditors.

ISO 14001 is part of the ISO 14000 family of standards which consist a total of 16 international standards. It is designed to to help company or organization in reducing any negative impact to the environment. While it does not absolutely dictate requirements in environmental performance, it serves organization as the framework in developing environmental management system.
