The Earth was not inhabitable for the first billion years because it was cooling off. When our solar system drifted from the Sagittarius Arm and was out in the open, the radiation from our sun was much more intense and life went crazy, i.e.: the Cambrian Era. There was also no oxygen until after plant life came about and produced it. Then animals and fungi emerged, thrived, and evolved.
