A mold is a hollow rock left by an organism,

A cast is when the rock is filled with sediment.

They both are usually found in creeks, rivers, and streams.

A mold is a negative imprint,

While a cast preserves the external form of the organism.

Molds are imprints from a shell or the skin of an animal. A cast is formed when a mold is filled with sediment and hardens into rock.

A:If the original organism dissolves or decays, leaving a hollow in the rock, that is a mold.

If the mold fills up with sediment which gradually hardens into the shape of the original organism, then that is a cast.

Casts are copies of fossilized plants or animals. Molds are hollow impressions of the fossil.
