Hell's Canyon on the border of Idaho and Oregon is generally recognized as the deepest canyon in the US as measured from He Devil Mountain (9,400'+) down to the confluence of Granite Creek and the Snake River. This is in a horizontal distance of under 5 1/2 miles. Measurements range from 7,993' up to 8,050' depending on how you measure it, as the true summit of He Devil is slightly east of the Granite Creek watershed and exact elevations have not been confirmed. Interestingly, the Kings River Canyon in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California is 8,251+' deep as measured from the summit of Spanish Mountain (10,051') down to the the confluence of Rough Creek and the Kings River. I add the "+" because the 1,800' contour is slightly above the confluence, so there are a few extra unmeasured feet below that. This is in a horizontal distance of about 4 1/2 miles.
