Fronts are associated with cyclones, or areas of low pressure, and occur when cold air masses meet warm ones (1). The circulation of the Earth's atmosphere causes the cold air to move eastwards and equatorwards (2) and the warm air to move eastwards and polewards in a wedge shape called the warm sector (3). This movement causes the front to buckle (4), with a warm front to the east, where the leading edge of the warm sector is replacing cold air, and a cold front to the west (5).
