Unfortunately, in our atmosphere, there are toxic particles. These particles are a combination of fossil fuels, chemical sprays and other toxins that come out of many factory smoke stacks. When a storm is forming, droplets of water encase some of these toxins and bring them back down as acid rain.

Pollution from mostly coal power stations and factories release sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides gases, which dissolve in the atmospheric water and cause acid rain.

Any gas that can deliver sulfur into the atmosphere can contribute to acid rain. Most commonly it is SO3 but any of the following would do.

H2S

SO

SO2

SO3
