The Earth's atmosphere is composed of four main areas:

  1. The Troposphere - this is the lowest layer, right above the Earth's surface, and it is where all our weather occurs. The thickness of this layer varies between about 9 km (or 30,000 ft) at the poles and 17 km (or 56,000 ft) at the equator. The temperature of the troposphere decreases as you go higher up.
  2. The Stratosphere -this is the second layer, which extends from about 12 km (or 7.5 miles) to about 51 km (32 miles) above the surface of the Earth. Unlike the troposphere, temperature actually increases with height due to the absorption of ultraviolet radiation by the ozone layer.
  3. The Mesosphere - this is the third layer, which extends from about 50 km (or 31 miles) to around 85 km (or 53 miles) above the surface of the Earth. The mesosphere is where meteors will burn up as they enter the atmosphere. The temperature of this layer decreases with height.
  4. The Thermosphere-this is the highest layer, and the temperature here actually increases with height, due to the low air density. The thermosphere begins at about 85 km (or 53 miles) above the Earth, and extends outwards to a distance between 500 and 1,000 km (or 311 to 621 miles). The International Space Station (ISS) maintains it's orbit within this layer (ranging between about 320 and 380 km), as do many artificial satellites. The thermosphere is also where aurora borealis and aurora australis mainly occur here as well.

What are the four most common layers of the atmosphere?

There are four major spheres of the Earth, which are lithosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. The atmosphere is divided into five layers, which are (in order from closest to surface to furthest from surface) troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere.
