Five Hurricanes actually hit the US in 2004, Charley, Frances, Gaston, Ivan and Jeanne. Bonnie was classified as a Tropical Storm when it made landfall, but it still managed to wreak considerable damage.
Tropical cyclones can be very unpredictable, especially in path. Some hurricanes quickly pose an immediate threat to land, while others harmlessly drift into the icy Canadian waters. Most formed hurricanes would move West or Northwest, but many tropical waves, remnants of U.S. storms, and wind shear affect the path of the hurricane. Hurricanes travel into the Gulf of Mexico usually because there is very little other activity affecting the storm, or influencing to move away to the Gulf's entrance. Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 was caused by a combination of warm ocean temperatures, moist air, and favorable wind conditions that fueled its development into a powerful storm. These factors are typical for the formation of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean during the peak of the hurricane season.
Hurricane Charley caused an estimated $16.9 billion in damage when it struck Florida in 2004, making it one of the most destructive hurricanes in U.S. history at the time. It is associated with at least 35 direct fatalities in the United States.
Yes, hurricanes can occur in Alabama, particularly along the Gulf Coast. Alabama has experienced hurricanes in the past, with notable examples including Hurricane Frederic in 1979 and Hurricane Ivan in 2004. There are no recorded source for any hurricanes in Lakeland, FL. There might be some small hurricanes and tornadoes that might have hit and didn't cause much damage. I am a Lakeland, FL resident born and raised.... We have indeed been hit by Hurricanes. The storm names Polk County residents will remember most from 2004 are Charley, Frances and Jeanne. We were hit by ALL THREE of them back to back within a 6 week period.
