Animal life uses oxygen in respiration, necessary for survival. Carbon Dioxide is released as a by-product. When a tree is burnt or rots it releases its CO2. When we burn fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), for energy or transport we add carbon dioxide to the air.

∙ 12y agoFossil fuels, like coal, oil and natural gas contain carbon, water, hydrogen and oxygen, as well as smaller amounts of nitrogen and sulphur. When fossil fuels are burnt the carbon joins oxygen from the air to form carbon dioxide (CO2) which is released into the atmosphere. CO2 is a powerful greenhouse gas that is causing global warming.
