Pyrite will usually break along crystal faces so it tends to be very blocky looking like tiny dice. Gold will look either rounded or sometimes flat. If the grains are large enuf to see with a good magnifying glass that is the easiest way.

Fools Gold - or pyrite is quite brittle - gold is quite sofy and maleable (bends easily)using a magnifying glass look closely at the grains and poken them with a needle or other simmilar sharp object, and gently poke the grains. If the grain dents / squishes or mushes - you have gold - if the grain shatters or breaks into tiny squarish chunks - you have fools gold.

The melting temperatures are also quite different. Gold will melt under a gentle flame - pyrite will not.

What are three ways you can describe gold scientific way?

Ways to find gold?

Mining: Traditional method of extracting gold from the earth by digging in mines. Panning: Using a gold pan to sift through sediment in rivers or streams to find small gold nuggets. Metal detectors: Searching for gold nuggets or deposits underground using specialized metal detecting equipment. Gold mines: Visiting established gold mines or areas known for historical gold production to search for gold.

Is gold mining sustainable?

Gold mining CAN be sustainable, but 85% or 90% of the time it isn't. Gold mining is hurting the environment badly, and it blasts away the entire mountains to unearth gold-rich ore. They blast it away with dynamite and large machines. Open-pit mining, Tunnel mining and dredging are a few ways of mining out gold. It hurt the environment because Waste Rock is around the mining area and it's too costly to move further away from the area the waste rock is in. Gold mining puts dust into the atmosphere and that's how they destroy habitats of animals. Well, that's all I have for this :P

What is the purpose of fools gold?

Fool's gold, also known as pyrite, is a mineral that has a similar appearance to real gold but is not valuable. It is used primarily in the production of sulfur dioxide for the chemical industry and as an ornamental material in jewelry and decorations. It is not used as a substitute for real gold because of its lower value and hardness.

How does fool's gold resemble real gold?

Fool's gold looks almost exactly like real gold. To tell them apart though you can test different ways. Fool's gold isn't very malleable (can't form it into sheets) and when crushed it is greenish brown not gold colored.

How do you know if the gold is real?

There are various ways to test if gold is real, including conducting a visual inspection for markings, conducting acid testing to check purity, checking the item's density, and using a magnet to see if it's attracted (real gold is not magnetic). For accurate confirmation, it's best to consult with a professional jeweler or use specialized testing equipment.

What tests are there to show gold from fool's gold?

This Test Is One Of The Most Accurate Tests For Gold This test is by far my favorite but not very well known at all. It was discovered over 100 years ago in New Zealand and has been used since by gold prospectors all over the world. This method of testing gold will definitely gain fame in the coming years with the price of gold rising and the need for everyday people like you and me to have safe, accurate, inexpensive ways to test our gold. I've already seen consumer gold testers using the same principals as this test for around 50 bucks as a "gold verification pen" or "goldvp" where just by writing on the gold with the pen will tell if the gold is real and the quality (karat) of the gold.Find something that you would like to test for gold contentPlace in a glass or plastic jar that has a cap.Pour into the jar the same volume of alcoholic solution of iodine (tincture of iodine, of chemists) as the metal your testingShake solution and test metal for 30 secondsTake A piece of Swedish filter-paperSaturate the filter paper with the clear supernatant liquid.Burn filter paper to an ashNotice the ash will be colored purple.Drip 4 drops of bromine-a on the ashIf the ash turns white this is a clear indication of genuine gold. The time occupied by the whole process is a few minutes.the simplest test to tell gold from fools gold is to strike it with a hammer: gold will simply flatten, fools gold will shatter.another test to tell gold from fools gold is to put a drop of nitric acid on the sample: gold will not react, fools gold gives off hydrogen sulfide which smells like rotten eggs.

How do you tell real gold chain?

From the top of my head, there are several ways to approach this. Assuming you're at a jewellers, you will be able to ask. Most jewellers will be more than happy to tell you and have a great depth of experience in this area. If you're by yourself, gold has several properties that are useful for testing. Firstly, gold is a fairly heavy metal. With a measuring flask and water you can calculate how many cubic centremeters of gold you have, then with some scales calculate the weight per cubic centremeter (or millilitre if you will), and compare this to what it should be (you should be able to find out the numbers you're afer from google). Secondly, gold does not set of metal detectors, so if you have this, it can form as a second test. I'm sure there are plenty of other ways to test as well, just look around on google :)

Does 14kt gold over sterling silver look like genuine 14kt gold?

If you are referring to 14kt gold plating, then yes it will look like genuine 14kt gold. Gold plating is designed to produce the look of gold and it is very effective because it is a layer of real gold covering. There are a few ways you can determine if something is gold plated vs real, solid gold. #1: Use a magnet: Real gold is not magnetic. If your jewelry is attracted to the magnet, it is probably not real gold. #2: Do a visual inspection around the edges of the jewelry. If the jewelry has been worn a bit, the edges will usually wear the most. If the piece is merely gold plated, you will often see the underlying metal coming through.
