When two oppostitely charged particles are put together they form a spark of electricity well, lightning is a result from this. You may noticed that if you walk outside in a thundestorm, mainly a severe one, you will feel static electricity in the air. Overall, an unstable environment is a main cause of a thunderstorm, the thunder is a result of the sound of those particles colliding which produce a sound known as thunder.
