Sir Edmund Hillary led the New Zealand party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1957-1958. This expedition was the first to reach the South Pole overland since Amundsen in 1911. Hillary was responsible for the team's logistical and equipment preparations, as well as leading the group to the South Pole.
Sir Edmund Hillary did not discover anything in Antarctica. He is best known for being one of the first climbers, along with Tenzing Norgay, to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.
