Hurricane Gloria first made landfall on coastal North Carolina, especially Cape Hatteras. (she had sistained winds of 105 m.p.h.) She paralleled the coast, and made her second landfall in central long island with lesser 85 m.p.h. sustained winds. Her winds affected the areas inlcuding Islip and Fire Island. Her final landfall was made in Bridgeport Connecticut, with sustained winds of 80 m.p.h.
The meteorological conditions, including temperature, precipitation, and wind, that characteristically prevail in a particular region.A region of the earth having particular meteorological conditions: lives in a cold climate.A prevailing condition or set of attitudes in human affairs: a climate of unrest.[Middle English climat, from Old French, from Late Latin clima, climat-, from Greek klima, surface of the earth, region.]the composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.
global winds generally blow from specific directions over long distances
Forward movement of the actual storm, which is where the eye is, is what is measured. The winds spin around the center having nothing to do with how fast the storm is moving - that is because of steering currents, like a Bermuda High or an approaching cold front. Oddly enough, if a category 3 hurricane is moving at 60 miles per hour like the 1938 Long Island Express, you combine forward movement with the sustained winds in the direction it is moving to give you, specifically at that part of the storm, category 5 winds. 120 mph sustained plus 60 mph forward movement equals...180 mph sustained winds in that region/area of the storm (it's opposite on the weak side of the storm, of course). Which explains why that hurricane was so destructive. Last I checked hurricanes don't carry luggage so why people continue to say "pack winds" I'll never understand. Skip Stone New Orleans, LA

All flights from New York stop at either Los Angeles or San Francisco. Flying time is roughly 21hours (19hours in opposite direction due to prevailing winds)
As the hurricane approaches Long Island, the wind will likely be from the northeast. However, as the eye will be very close to, if not pass over, Long Island, the wind direction will change as the storm approaches, passes over and departs. At times the wind could come from the north, the east, the west or the south. When the storm is departing to the north and northest, the winds will likely be from the southwest.
