Run Away! Get to higher ground!

I live in the southwest desert where flash floods are

common. We're taught that the best offense is a good defense. Pay attention

to weather forecasts. Know if you are in a low lying area or near

an arroyo or not. Have a plan to gather your family and leave, if need be.

Establish a predetermined family meeting place in case you are all scattered.

Have an emergency kit ready. (food, drinks, flashlight, blankets, spare cell

phone battery ... you get the idea)

If you have kids in school, talk to school authorities about

what their plans are in case of a flood (or any emergency for that matter)

Make sure that all your family members know how to swim.

If you are seriously and/or regularly threatened by floods, It couldn't

hurt to have life preservers available. A small boat or canoe wouldn't

hurt either.

Check with your insurance agent. Many families are shocked to find

that they didn't have the coverage that they thought they did.
